20 questions with Nicholas Harmer:(from 2000).
1. Hometown?
I grew up an army brat so we moved around quite a bit when I was young. However, I spent most of my public education years (junior high/high school) in Puyallup, WA...which was a very oppressive environment to grow up in so it definately meant that I had to be a bit more creative in finding fun things to do...
2. Age?
I am twenty-five. My birthday is January 23.
3. Nicknames?
I don't really have any that have stuck...can you think of any?
4. Favourite colour?
Darker blues. Browns.
5. Favourite food?
Anything Thai. Most Italian too.
6. Word or phrases that you overuse?
From Rushmore: "You! You're out!"
7. Favourite sport?
To watch on t.v.: final four college basketball. Those kids play their guts out and not because they HAVE a Nike contract but because they WANT one and, presumably, bragging rights. To actually play: water polo/swimming...
8. Favourite book?
How about plural, favorite books: Vineland, T. Pynchon. Breakfast of Champions, K. Vonnegut. Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger. City of Quartz, Mike Davis. Doom Patrols, Steven Shaviro.
9. If your house was on fire and you could save only one thing, what would it be?
I have a unique picture of my deceased grandmother that is irreplacable, and then in decending order: my bass. or my own ass.
10. Favourite movies?
Rushmore. anything by Errol Morris. Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Edward Scissorhands. Bottle Rocket. City of Lost Children. The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover. Titus. Heat. Nightmare Before Christmas. The Twin Peaks series. Well, almost anything by David Lynch. Most Kubrick as well.
11. your hobbies?
I write. I collect things. I collect 1950's toasters (seriously), Alice in Wonderland stuff, Nightmare Before Christmas stuff, Simpsons stuff, McFarland toys action figures. Mostly I collect toys that are strange and a bit off kilter from the mainstream. I am a pop culture junkie of sorts. A geek too.
12. Favourite place to visit?
The coast. Waves and sand do it for me. Not necessarliy sunny and hot, but just waves and sand. In fact I prefer brooding, dark clouds.
13. Favourite ice cream flavor?
Vanilla. Hands down.
14. If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why?
I like the idea of being a red pepper...you know zesty and kind of spicy and adds color to a dish etc...in reality though, if we were to match vegetables with personalities I'd probably be more like a carrot: snappy, kinda nutricious, orange, and resilient. I guess.
15. Is the glass half empty or half full?
Half full. Always.
16. Musical influences?
Talk Talk's Laughing Stock. anything by Low. Pixies. Godspeed you Black Emperor. Cat Power. De La Soul.
17. If you weren't doing music right now, what do you think you'd be doing with your life?
I would be either in graduate school or sweating it out hoping I'll get into graduate school. Most likely the latter.
18. Favourite song at the moment?
"Flame" by Sebadoh
19. Best show you've ever been to?
Tough question...EITHER Low at the Knitting Factory in New York OR Jeff Buckley, solo, at the Starfish Room in Vancouver, BC. Nope, I take it all back: Operation Re-Information at the 3-B tavern in Bellingham was super great...then again the CHAMPS at the Breakroom really blew me away....and Botch at the Last Rockcandy(an all ages club in Seattle) show killed....ohhh, can't forget about Muddy Frankenstein, the Japanese Iggy Pop, he slew me too...then again, at the Pixies show I was so excited to see them that I honestly started crying when they came out on stage...(are you beginning to see my problem here?...I can't choose just one...sorry)
20. Favorite death cab song?
Right now? Company Calls Epilogue.
