Song Meanings: Backslide

Home

"I started this with an off-base intro to catch your ear, and then it turns out to be just a punk song. Josh Freese tears this one apart. The only other drummer I can think of who can play this kind of stuff this well is Dave Grohl. There's definitely a certain energy and attitude that comes from having a punk drummer. I wrote it with David Werner at his house. He was on the phone, so I picked up a magazine, and there was this article about Robert Downey Jr. I read it, and man, it just killed me; this guy is totally fucked up. We were working on 'Cellophane' at the time, which was about Iggy Pop, so these two songs were about two people we were fans of, but at the same time we can say, 'Oh, man. Not the way to go.'"
